Sonotube Concrete Calculator

Concrete for tube forms: enter the tube diameter and depth, get the volume in yards and the exact bag count for 60 or 80-lb mix.

Short answer

Sonotube Concrete Calculator

1680-lb bags for 4 tubes

Bag territory. Fast-setting mix is worth the premium for posts — it sets in 20–40 minutes without bracing.

How it's calculated: 0.32 yd³ total · 4 bags per tube + 5% spare Adjust the inputs below to recalculate for your own numbers.

Formula used

Cylinder volume

Tubes are never perfectly round once set in the hole, so buy one extra bag per tube. Depth must reach below the local frost line — 12 inches in the deep South, 48+ in the upper Midwest.

volume = π × (diameter ÷ 2)² × depth, all in feet; bags = volume ÷ bag yield (80-lb ≈ 0.60 ft³, 60-lb ≈ 0.45 ft³)
10-in × 4-ft tube
≈ 6 × 80-lb bags

Depth is code, not preference

Footings above the frost line get jacked upward by freezing soil — the classic cause of leaning decks and heaved posts. Your county building department publishes the required depth; call 811 before digging regardless.

Setting the tube right

Set the tube on 6 inches of gravel, brace it plumb, and rod or tap the concrete as you fill to release air pockets. Slope the top of the concrete away from the post so water sheds instead of pooling against the wood.

FAQ

How many bags for a 12-inch Sonotube 4 feet deep?

About 7 bags of 80-lb or 10 bags of 60-lb mix. The tube holds 3.14 cubic feet.

Do I need gravel under a Sonotube?

Yes — 4–6 inches of compacted gravel under the tube provides drainage and a stable base, and it's what most codes expect below the footing.
