Concrete Bag Calculator

How many 40, 60, or 80-lb bags of concrete your project takes — from dimensions or from a yardage figure — with the ready-mix crossover check.

Short answer

Concrete Bag Calculator

5680-lb bags needed

Bagged mix is the right call at this scale. Buy 59 (5% extra) — a partly-mixed bag that goes unused is cheap insurance against a mid-pour store run.

How it's calculated: 1.23 yd³ total — about $392 in bags Adjust the inputs below to recalculate for your own numbers.

Formula used

Bags from volume

One cubic yard takes 45 eighty-pound bags, 60 sixty-pound, or 90 forty-pound. Yields are manufacturer-published for standard 4,000-psi mixes and vary about 5% with water content.

bags = (L × W × thickness ÷ 12) ÷ bag yield, where 80-lb ≈ 0.60 ft³, 60-lb ≈ 0.45 ft³, 40-lb ≈ 0.30 ft³

The mixing reality check

Each 80-lb bag is 2–3 minutes of mixing in a wheelbarrow or mixer — 45 bags (one yard) is two to three hours of continuous heavy work, and the concrete is setting while you mix. Past about 20 bags, rent a mixer; past 45, call a truck.

Fast-setting vs standard mix

Fast-setting bags (for posts) cost more per bag but set in 20–40 minutes without bracing. For slabs, standard mix is the right product — the extra working time is what lets you screed and float properly.

FAQ

How many 80-lb bags make a yard?

45. An 80-lb bag yields about 0.60 cubic feet and a yard is 27 cubic feet: 27 ÷ 0.60 = 45.

Is bagged concrete as strong as ready-mix?

Yes — standard bagged mixes are 4,000 psi, the same as typical residential ready-mix. The difference is cost and labor, not strength.
