Why do tailwheel aircraft rent for more than comparable nosewheel airplanes?

Tailwheel trainers like Citabrias, Super Cubs, and Decathlons are lower-production, often older or more specialized airframes with a smaller rental pool and higher insurance costs due to the higher ground-loop risk profile in training, all of which push rental rates up relative to a mass-produced nosewheel trainer like a 172.

Is 8 hours a realistic estimate?

It's a reasonable middle estimate — some experienced pilots with strong rudder skills and crosswind proficiency solo a taildragger in as few as 3-5 hours, while pilots without much crosswind or tailwheel-adjacent experience sometimes need 12-15 hours to become consistently safe on landing rollout, particularly in gusty conditions.
