FAQ
Why 250 hours for Part 61 but only 190 for Part 141?
Part 141 schools operate FAA-approved structured curricula with closer oversight, which the FAA credits with a lower minimum hour requirement (190 hours, including specific dual and solo/PIC splits) versus the generic Part 61 pathway's 250-hour minimum. The tradeoff is 141 programs are less flexible about pacing and often require staying enrolled full-time.
Do I need a complex or high-performance airplane for the checkride?
The commercial single-engine airplane practical test standards require the applicant to have logged training in a complex, turbine-powered, or technically advanced aircraft (TAA) meeting specific criteria, and the checkride itself must be flown in a complex or TAA aircraft for ASEL. If you trained entirely in a basic trainer like a 172, budget for a checkout in a complex aircraft (like an Arrow) before the test.
What's the fastest legal way to build the remaining hours cheaply?
Time-building in a cheap, simple airplane (a basic two-seat trainer rather than a complex or larger aircraft) for cross-country PIC hours is usually far cheaper per hour than doing it in a more capable airplane, since the hour requirement doesn't care what you flew, only that it counts as PIC time in an appropriate category/class.
Does this certificate alone qualify me to be paid to fly?
It legally allows compensation for flying under specific conditions, but most paying jobs (charter, cargo, most commercial operations) require it be combined with an instrument rating, and many entry-level jobs like flight instruction require a separate CFI certificate on top. The commercial certificate alone is rarely the end goal — it's usually a stepping stone.
