About this calculator

Inventory turns measure how many times you sell through your average retail stock in a year — a low number means cash is tied up in shelf product that isn't moving, while a very high number can mean you're stocking out and losing sales. This calculator takes your annual cost of goods sold (COGS) for retail and your average inventory value at cost, then computes turns per year and days of inventory on hand. Salon retail typically targets 4-6 turns per year; specialty product lines with slower velocity (styling tools, niche skincare) may run 2-3 turns acceptably, while fast-moving shampoo and conditioner lines should be turning 6-8 times or more.

FormulaInventory turns = annual COGS ÷ average inventory value (at cost). Days on hand = 365 ÷ turns.

FAQ

What's a good inventory turn rate for salon retail?

4-6 turns per year is standard for general salon retail (shampoo, conditioner, styling product). Below 3 turns means too much cash is sitting on shelves in slow SKUs; above 8-10 turns can mean you're understocking and possibly losing sales to stockouts, especially on best-sellers.

Why does inventory turnover matter if the product eventually sells?

Cash tied up in unsold inventory can't be used for payroll, marketing, or equipment. A bottle sitting on the shelf for six months instead of two also increases risk of damage, expiration, or discontinuation by the manufacturer, and it ties up shelf space that could hold better-performing product.

How do I improve slow turns without discounting everything?

Start by identifying the specific SKUs dragging the average down rather than discounting the whole retail line. Often it's 2-3 products that were overordered or don't fit your clientele; clearing those through a targeted promotion and not reordering them fixes most of the problem without a blanket sale.

Accuracy and limitations

  • Results are estimates before tax, fees, and inflation unless an input explicitly covers them.
  • Rates are treated as fixed for the whole period — variable-rate products will drift from this projection.
  • This is educational maths, not financial advice. Check anything contractual with the lender or your accountant.
