About this calculator
Color is the highest-cost service category in most salons, and it's the one most often underpriced because owners price off competitor menus instead of actual product spend. This calculator breaks a color service into tube/bowl usage: grams of color, developer ratio, foil or bowl count, and toner, then converts that into a dollar cost using your wholesale price per ounce or per box. It compares that cost against your service price to show gross margin in dollars and percent. Most full-service colorists should be targeting 8-12% product cost as a share of the service price; anything above 15% usually means either overuse, under-pricing, or both. Run a full foil highlight and a single-process retouch side by side to see how differently they eat into margin.

FAQ
What's a healthy product cost percentage for color?
8-12% of the service price is standard for a well-run salon. If your product cost is running 15-20%, either your colorists are overusing product (common with inexperienced staff mixing more than needed), your pricing hasn't kept up with product cost inflation, or you're buying at bad wholesale terms.
How do I estimate grams of color used without weighing?
A full head of color on medium-length hair typically runs 60-90 grams total across all sections. Track a few services with a kitchen scale for two weeks to build real averages by service type rather than guessing, since guesses tend to run low and hide true cost.
Should retail product cost be included here?
No, this calculator is service-delivery cost only — the color, developer, and processing supplies used on the client. Retail product sold to clients to take home is a separate revenue and cost line and should be tracked with its own margin, typically 40-50% cost of goods.
Does buying in bulk change this much?
Yes, meaningfully. Cost per gram often drops 15-25% when buying by the liter or in case quantities versus single tubes, so a salon doing high color volume should renegotiate wholesale pricing annually rather than reordering the same SKUs by habit.
Accuracy and limitations
- Results are estimates before tax, fees, and inflation unless an input explicitly covers them.
- Rates are treated as fixed for the whole period — variable-rate products will drift from this projection.
- This is educational maths, not financial advice. Check anything contractual with the lender or your accountant.
