About this calculator
Every print run loses some material to makeready — the sheets a press or printer burns through calibrating color, registration, and speed before it produces a saleable copy. Digital presses waste very little, often under 1%, while offset presses commonly waste 3-8% of a run depending on job complexity and press condition, and screen printing loses shirts to misprints, ghosting, and setup tests at a similar 3-6% rate for typical shops. This calculator takes your ordered quantity, a waste percentage based on your process, and computes how many extra units to produce so you deliver the full order after normal spoilage, plus the added material cost of that overrun. It also flags overrun economics: since trade custom in printing allows delivering within 5-10% over or under the ordered quantity without penalty, it's often cheaper to print a small planned overrun than to run a costly second short makeready pass later.

What's a normal waste rate by process?
Digital press: under 1-2%. Offset litho: 3-8% depending on job length and press setup complexity. Screen printing: 3-6% from misprints and press adjustments. Wide-format/vinyl: 3-10% from trim, registration, and material defects.
What is trade custom overage/underage?
Long-standing printing industry practice (and often written into contracts) allows delivering 5-10% over or under the ordered quantity without price adjustment or penalty, because exact-count production runs are impractical on many processes. Should I print extra on purpose?
