FAQ
Why is offset cheaper at high volume despite plate cost?
Offset presses run large sheets at high speed with ink cost per impression that drops sharply as run length grows, since setup (plate burning, press makeready, color calibration) is a one-time cost that gets diluted across every sheet printed after it.
Is digital ever cheaper at high volume?
Rarely for pure quantity, but digital wins when a job needs variable data (each card different, like sequential numbering or personalization), because offset can't vary content sheet-to-sheet without a full plate change.
What about print quality differences?
Offset generally produces more consistent, richer color especially with spot (Pantone) inks and heavier stocks, while digital toner-based presses have improved greatly but can still show slight banding or less color-matching accuracy on large solid areas.
Does paper stock choice affect the breakeven point?
Not the crossover math directly, but specialty stocks (soft-touch, uncoated cotton, foil) often add a flat surcharge on both methods, which doesn't change the breakeven quantity since it applies to both proportionally.
