Print shop production planning depends on knowing how many finished pieces a roll of media will actually yield, accounting for the print's dimensions, gap/margin between images, and end-of-roll waste that's unusable once it gets too short to feed cleanly. This calculator takes roll width and length, your print width and height with a gap allowance, and a fixed end-of-roll waste allowance, then computes usable prints per roll and cost per print from the roll's purchase price. It also handles the print's orientation choice (rotating a print 90 degrees sometimes yields more copies per roll width depending on aspect ratio) implicitly by letting you enter the effective width you're nesting against. FAQ
Why allow end-of-roll waste?
The last few feet of a roll often can't feed cleanly through the printer once the diameter gets too small, or gets damaged from the cardboard core mounting adhesive. A 2-4 foot allowance on a 100-foot roll is standard practice to avoid promising more yield than you'll actually get.
Should I rotate prints to fit more across the roll?
Yes, always check both orientations. A 36x24 inch print on a 54-inch roll fits one across in portrait but potentially two if rotated to fit its 24-inch dimension against the width, which can nearly double yield depending on your specific dimensions.
How does gap size affect total cost efficiency?
Larger gaps waste media directly — going from a 0.5-inch to 2-inch gap on a run of 40 prints wastes an extra 60 inches (5 feet) of roll length, which is real cost on expensive specialty media.
