Most overtime underpayments are arithmetic, not malice — a two-minute check catches them.

About this calculator

Check whether a paycheck matches federal overtime law. Enter your hourly wage and total hours worked in the week; the calculator splits hours at 40, applies the 1.5× FLSA rate, and shows the correct gross.

FormulaRegular hours = min(total hours, 40). Overtime hours = max(0, total − 40). Gross = wage × regular hours + wage × 1.5 × overtime hours.

FAQ

How much overtime pay am I owed for a 50-hour week?

Ten hours at 1.5× your wage on top of 40 hours at straight time. At $20/hour: $800 regular + $300 overtime = $1,100 gross.

Can my employer average two weeks to avoid overtime?

No. The FLSA workweek stands alone — hours can't be averaged across weeks, even on a biweekly pay schedule.

What if my paycheck used straight time for all hours?

That's a shortfall of 0.5× your wage for every hour over 40. At $20/hour and 10 OT hours, you'd be owed an extra $100 that week.

Accuracy and limitations

  • Results are estimates before tax, fees, and inflation unless an input explicitly covers them.
  • Rates are treated as fixed for the whole period — variable-rate products will drift from this projection.
  • This is educational maths, not financial advice. Check anything contractual with the lender or your accountant.
