About this calculator
Brake quotes look inflated until you separate what is actually being replaced. Pads alone on one axle is a one-hour job; pads and rotors on both axles with a fluid flush is four times the parts and three times the labor, and if a caliper is seized the price steps again. Shops often quote the full package because turning old rotors is largely obsolete on modern thin discs, but you are entitled to know which line is which. This calculator prices per axle, lets you add rotors, calipers and a fluid flush independently, applies your state's labor rate and tax band, and shows the cost per axle so you can compare a quote line by line. Worked assumption for the defaults: pads and rotors on both axles, no calipers, plus a fluid flush, 3 book hours at the $105 US-average rate, 7.25% tax — about $870.

FAQ
Do rotors always need replacing with pads?
Not always, but often. Modern rotors are cast thin and frequently fall below minimum thickness by the time the pads wear out, and machining costs nearly as much as a budget rotor. Ask the shop for the measured thickness and the minimum stamped on the rotor.
How long should brake pads last?
Typically 30,000–70,000 miles, with city driving, towing and heavy vehicles at the low end. Rear pads on cars with electronic parking brakes sometimes wear faster than fronts, which surprises people.
Where do the state labor rates come from?
They are independent-shop door rates by state band — what a non-dealer shop charges per book hour before parts. Rates cluster tightly by market cost of living, which is why the tool groups states rather than pretending each one has a single number. If you already have a quote, back out the shop's own rate and use that.
Why show a range instead of one price?
Because two honest shops quote the same job 20–30% apart on parts sourcing alone — OEM versus quality aftermarket, remanufactured versus new, and whether the flat-rate book hours match what the job actually takes on your vehicle. The range is the band most real quotes land inside; the midpoint is what to expect.
Accuracy and limitations
- Results are estimates before tax, fees, and inflation unless an input explicitly covers them.
- Rates are treated as fixed for the whole period — variable-rate products will drift from this projection.
