About this calculator

The sticker price of a tire is roughly three-quarters of what you pay. Mounting and balancing, new valve stems or TPMS sensor service, a disposal fee that several states set by statute, road-hazard coverage if you take it, and an alignment that most shops recommend on a full set all land on the same invoice — commonly $120–200 on top of four tires before tax. This calculator prices the set, itemises every add-on, applies your state's sales-tax band, and converts the result into a cost per mile using the tire's treadwear expectation so you can compare a cheap tire against a long-wearing one honestly. Worked assumption for the defaults: four $165 tires, $28 per tire of mounting and balancing, $6 disposal each, a $110 alignment, 7.25% tax, expected 50,000 miles — about $1,000, or 2.0 cents per mile.

FormulaTotal = (tires × price + tires × (mount + disposal + TPMS) + alignment + road hazard) × (1 + tax); cost per mile = total ÷ expected tread life.

FAQ

Is a more expensive tire cheaper per mile?

Often, yes. A $220 tire rated for 80,000 miles beats a $140 tire rated for 45,000 on cost per mile, and usually stops shorter in the wet. Run both through the tool and compare the cents-per-mile line rather than the sticker.

Do I have to replace all four?

On all-wheel drive, generally yes — mismatched rolling diameters stress the drivetrain. On two-wheel drive you can replace in pairs, and the new pair belongs on the rear axle regardless of which wheels drive the car.

Why do states charge a tire fee?

Most states levy a scrap-tire disposal fee, usually $1–5 per tire, funding recycling programs. It shows up as a separate line, and in some states it is taxable while in others it is not.

Why show a range instead of one price?

Because two honest shops quote the same job 20–30% apart on parts sourcing alone — OEM versus quality aftermarket, remanufactured versus new, and whether the flat-rate book hours match what the job actually takes on your vehicle. The range is the band most real quotes land inside; the midpoint is what to expect.
