About this calculator
A transmission quote is really three decisions stacked together: which unit goes in, who installs it, and whether the car is worth the money at all. A used unit from a salvage yard is the cheapest and the riskiest; a remanufactured unit with a three-year nationwide warranty costs roughly double and is what most shops recommend on a car you plan to keep; a dealer-installed factory unit is the most expensive by a wide margin. Labor is where the state rate bites — the same 8-hour job costs $660 in Alabama and $1,240 in the Bay Area before a single part. This calculator prices the unit, the fluid and hardware, the book hours at your state's rate with an optional dealer premium, and the sales tax band, then compares the total against your car's value so you can see the replace-versus-retire line. Worked assumption for the defaults: a remanufactured unit at $2,600, 8 book hours at the $105 US-average rate, $280 in fluid and hardware, 7.25% tax on parts — about $3,930 all in, against a $6,500 vehicle.

FAQ
Where do the state labor rates come from?
They are independent-shop door rates by state band — what a non-dealer shop charges per book hour before parts. Rates cluster tightly by market cost of living, which is why the tool groups states rather than pretending each one has a single number. If you already have a quote, back out the shop's own rate and use that.
Why show a range instead of one price?
Because two honest shops quote the same job 20–30% apart on parts sourcing alone — OEM versus quality aftermarket, remanufactured versus new, and whether the flat-rate book hours match what the job actually takes on your vehicle. The range is the band most real quotes land inside; the midpoint is what to expect.
When is a transmission not worth replacing?
A common rule of thumb is to stop when the repair passes about half the car's value and the rest of the car is also tired. If the body, engine and tires are sound, a remanufactured unit on a $6,000 car still beats $28,000 of replacement vehicle for most drivers.
Is a used transmission a bad idea?
Not automatically, but the warranty is usually 30–90 days on the part only — you pay the labor twice if it fails. It makes sense on a low-value car you plan to sell soon and rarely anywhere else.
