About this calculator
Replacing an engine is one of the few repairs where the right answer is often 'don't', and the only way to know is to put the swap next to the alternative in the same units. This calculator prices the engine itself — used, remanufactured long block, or new crate — the ancillary parts that always go on with it (gaskets, belts, water pump, fluids, sometimes a clutch or torque converter), and the swap labor at your state's shop rate with a dealer premium if applicable. It then compares the total to the depreciated cost per year of a replacement vehicle, which is the comparison people actually face. Worked assumption for the defaults: a $3,400 remanufactured long block, $650 of ancillaries, 14 book hours at the $105 US-average rate, 7.25% tax — about $5,800, which is roughly 24 months of ownership on a $16,000 replacement car losing $2,900 a year.

FAQ
Where do the state labor rates come from?
They are independent-shop door rates by state band — what a non-dealer shop charges per book hour before parts. Rates cluster tightly by market cost of living, which is why the tool groups states rather than pretending each one has a single number. If you already have a quote, back out the shop's own rate and use that.
Used engine or remanufactured?
A used engine is a gamble on someone else's maintenance with a short parts-only warranty. A remanufactured long block is rebuilt to spec with a multi-year warranty and is the default recommendation on any car you intend to keep more than two years.
Does replacing the engine reset the odometer or the value?
Neither. The odometer keeps counting and buyers discount the car anyway, though documented receipts for a reman engine do help. Replace an engine to keep driving the car, not to resell it.
Why show a range instead of one price?
Because two honest shops quote the same job 20–30% apart on parts sourcing alone — OEM versus quality aftermarket, remanufactured versus new, and whether the flat-rate book hours match what the job actually takes on your vehicle. The range is the band most real quotes land inside; the midpoint is what to expect.
Accuracy and limitations
