About this calculator
Hybrid and EV battery replacement is the single figure that decides whether these cars are cheap or ruinous to own, and the honest answer is that it depends on which of four routes you take. Federal rules require at least eight years or 100,000 miles of coverage on the traction battery — longer in CARB states — so the first question is always whether you are paying at all. If you are, a module-level rebuild on an older hybrid can be a few thousand dollars, a remanufactured pack somewhat more, and a new dealer pack on a modern EV can approach the value of the car. This calculator prices each route with a state labor rate, adds the core charge and disposal, and shows the cost per remaining year of expected pack life. Worked assumption for the defaults: a remanufactured hybrid pack at $3,200, 4 hours labor at the $105 US-average rate, $200 in hardware, 7.25% tax minus a $500 core credit — about $3,570, or roughly $450 a year over eight expected years.

FAQ
How long does the federal warranty last?
At least 8 years or 100,000 miles on the traction battery under federal rules, and 10 years or 150,000 miles in states that follow California's requirements for newer vehicles. Check the in-service date, not the model year, and get the dealer to run a state-of-health test in writing before you buy anything.
Is a module rebuild worth it?
On an older nickel-metal-hydride hybrid, often yes — the failed modules are replaced and the pack rebalanced for a fraction of a new pack. It buys years, not a decade, and the shop's warranty is the thing to compare.
Do EV packs really need replacing?
Most do not within typical ownership. Real-world fleet data shows gradual capacity fade rather than outright failure, and outside recalls and rare defects, full pack replacement is uncommon. Price it as a tail risk, not an expected maintenance item.
Why show a range instead of one price?
Because two honest shops quote the same job 20–30% apart on parts sourcing alone — OEM versus quality aftermarket, remanufactured versus new, and whether the flat-rate book hours match what the job actually takes on your vehicle. The range is the band most real quotes land inside; the midpoint is what to expect.
Accuracy and limitations
