About this calculator
Winery cost per bottle is easy to underestimate because grape cost, barrel aging, bottling materials, and case packaging all need to be allocated per bottle, and aging ties up cash for a year or more before the wine ever sells. This calculator takes cost per ton of grapes, expected gallons per ton, bottling and packaging cost, and an aging carrying cost (interest or opportunity cost on tied-up inventory) to produce a real cost per 750ml bottle. Wineries that price off a flat 3x or 4x markup on grape cost alone miss the glass, cork, capsule, label, and case cost, which together often run $2.50-4.00 per bottle before any wine is even considered, plus the aging carry cost that grows with barrel program length.

FAQ
Why divide by 0.198 gallons per bottle?
A standard 750ml bottle holds 0.198 US gallons. Dividing total finished gallons by that figure gives the bottle count. It's a small enough conversion that a lot of hobbyist-turned-commercial winemakers get it slightly wrong and overstate their bottle yield by rounding to 0.2 gallons.
What counts as racking and fining loss?
Wine lost to lees left behind during racking, sediment removed during fining and filtration, and barrel evaporation (the 'angel's share,' commonly 2-5% per year of barrel aging) all reduce final volume. Total loss from crush to bottle commonly runs 8-15% depending on how many rackings and how long the wine ages in barrel.
Why include an aging carrying cost?
Wine tied up in barrel for 18-24 months is cash that isn't earning anything and can't be redeployed. Even a conservative 6-8% annual opportunity cost on the grape and barrel investment adds real cost per bottle, and ignoring it makes barrel-aged reserve wines look more profitable than they actually are relative to a quick-turn white.
