About this calculator
Estimates annual energy savings from replacing old single-pane or early double-pane windows with modern low-E double- or triple-pane units, based on the U-factor improvement (the inverse relationship of R-value, lower U-factor means less heat transfer) and windows' typical share of a home's total heat loss. Window replacement has one of the longest payback periods of any home energy upgrade — often 15-30+ years on energy savings alone — so this calculator is honest about that rather than inflating the case; comfort, condensation, noise reduction, and UV fading protection are real benefits that don't show up in a pure dollar payback but often matter more to homeowners in practice.

FAQ
Is a 20-year payback actually a bad investment?
On energy savings alone it's a slow one compared to insulation or air sealing, which often pay back in 3-7 years. But windows also add home value, fix drafts and condensation problems, reduce outside noise, and protect furniture from UV fading — factor those in separately since they're real value that a pure energy-payback number misses.
What U-factor should new windows have?
ENERGY STAR requires U-factor 0.27 or lower in northern climate zones and 0.30 or lower in southern zones for the ENERGY STAR label; triple-pane windows can reach U-factor 0.15-0.20 but cost significantly more and rarely pay for that extra jump in most US climates outside the coldest regions.
Should I replace all windows at once or gradually?
Replacing gradually (worst-performing rooms first) spreads cost but loses any whole-house contractor discount and means living with mismatched windows for years. If budget allows, a single project usually gets better per-window pricing; if not, prioritize north-facing and largest windows first for the biggest per-window impact.
Does window replacement affect cooling costs too?
Yes — low-E coatings with a low solar heat gain coefficient (SHGC) block summer solar heat gain significantly, which matters more in cooling-dominated climates. This calculator's window-share input should reflect combined heating and cooling loss if you live somewhere with meaningful AC costs.
