This calculator takes projected gross tuition revenue, a target discount rate ceiling, and any dedicated funding (endowment draw, annual fund allocation for aid) to compute the maximum sustainable aid budget and how much of that must come from tuition dollars versus dedicated funding. It also shows the average award size available if you spread the aid budget across an expected number of aid recipients, which is a useful gut check before individual award decisions start — if the average award works out far below what families typically need to actually enroll, the target discount rate or funding plan needs revisiting before awards go out, not after.

How do I pick a target discount rate ceiling?

Start from your historical rate and comparable-school benchmarks, then adjust based on how much dedicated funding (endowment draw, annual fund) you have to offset tuition-funded aid. A school with strong endowment support can sustainably run a higher discount rate than one funding aid entirely from operating tuition, since the ceiling should reflect what the operating budget can absorb without cutting programs.

Why show 'average award' when awards vary by family need?

It's a planning sanity check, not an award formula. If your average comes out to $2,000 per recipient but your real cost of attendance gap for a typical aid family is $8,000, either you need fewer, larger awards, more total budget, or a different aid philosophy (need-based tiers vs. flat awards) before the committee starts reviewing individual applications.

What happens if aid decisions exceed the cap mid-cycle?

This is the most common budget blowout in enrollment-driven organizations: committees approve awards application-by-application without tracking a running total against the cap, and discover the overage only after all decisions are final.
