About this calculator
Producing a credible sustainability report involves more than writing — data collection and internal coordination across facilities and business units, third-party assurance of key metrics, design and production, and increasingly XBRL tagging or framework-specific formatting for regulatory filings like the EU's CSRD or California's SB 253. This calculator estimates the total budget across those categories scaled to company size and reporting maturity, based on typical consulting and internal-hours costs reported by sustainability communications firms and Big Four assurance practices. Report cost scales less with company size than people expect and more with the number of frameworks you're reporting against simultaneously — a company aligning to GRI, SASB, and TCFD concurrently pays substantially more in consultant and internal coordination time than one following a single framework, even at similar revenue size.

FAQ
Why doesn't report cost scale directly with company revenue?
Data collection coordination effort depends more on the number of facilities, business units, and geographies you have to gather data from than on revenue itself. A $50M company with 20 global facilities can face more coordination cost than a $500M company with three domestic sites, which is why headcount and site count are often better cost predictors than revenue.
Is third-party assurance required?
It's becoming mandatory under emerging regulation — the EU's CSRD requires limited assurance initially and reasonable assurance eventually, and California's SB 253 will require assurance for large companies reporting Scope 1 and 2 emissions. Even where not legally required, assurance meaningfully increases investor and rating-agency confidence in your numbers.
How much does reporting to multiple frameworks really add?
Frameworks share some underlying data (emissions, energy, workforce metrics) but differ in required disclosures, materiality assessment approach, and format, so each additional framework adds real incremental mapping and consulting work rather than being a simple relabeling exercise. Companies aligning GRI, SASB, and TCFD simultaneously commonly see 40-80% higher total reporting cost than single-framework reporters.
