About this calculator
ESG rating agencies score companies on dozens of weighted sub-factors, and moving a rating up a meaningful notch (say, from a middling to a strong tier on MSCI or Sustainalytics-style scales) generally requires a bundle of initiatives rather than one silver bullet: emissions data assurance, a science-based target, a supplier code of conduct rollout, board diversity disclosure, and so on. This calculator lets you estimate the rough budget for a common improvement bundle scaled to company size, based on typical consulting, software, and internal FTE costs organizations report for these programs. It's a planning tool, not a guarantee — rating agencies also weight controversies, sector context, and disclosure completeness that no calculator can price, but it gives sustainability and finance teams a starting budget range for board conversations about committing to a rating improvement target.
Worked example
Using the values the calculator loads with:
Inputs
- Annual revenue: 200 $M
- Emissions data assurance (annual): 45000 $
- SBTi target-setting & validation: 60000 $
- Dedicated sustainability FTEs needed: 1.5
- Fully loaded cost per FTE: 140000 $
- Initiative/program budget (supplier code, reporting platform, etc.): 85000 $
Results
- Estimated first-year budget: $400,000
- Dedicated staff cost: $210,000
- Share of annual revenue: 0.200%
- Ongoing annual cost (staff + assurance): $255,000

FAQ
Does spending this budget guarantee a better ESG rating?
No. Rating agencies weight disclosure quality, controversy history, and sector-specific factors alongside program existence, and different agencies (MSCI, Sustainalytics, ISS) use different methodologies that can move in opposite directions from the same actions. Treat this as the cost of building credible programs and disclosure, which correlates with but doesn't guarantee score movement.
What's the single highest-leverage investment in this budget?
Third-party assurance on your emissions data tends to have outsized impact because most rating agencies specifically flag or downweight unverified self-reported data. It's also one of the cheaper line items relative to a full target-setting and program rollout, making it a common first investment for companies just starting formal ESG reporting.
How does company size change this budget?
Assurance and target-setting costs scale slower than revenue since they're largely fixed-scope consulting engagements, so smaller companies pay a proportionally larger share of revenue for the same program. Larger companies see program and FTE costs grow roughly linearly with the complexity of their supply chain and business unit count instead.
Accuracy and limitations
- Results are estimates before tax, fees, and inflation unless an input explicitly covers them.
- Rates are treated as fixed for the whole period — variable-rate products will drift from this projection.
- This is educational maths, not financial advice. Check anything contractual with the lender or your accountant.
