About this calculator

Self-leveling underlayment compound is sold in bags that cover a specific area at a specific pour thickness, typically stated by the manufacturer as roughly 40-45 square feet per 50lb bag at a 1/8-inch (0.125 in) pour depth, with coverage dropping proportionally as depth increases. Because floors are rarely perfectly flat, most jobs pour a variable depth, so this calculator asks for your floor area and your average fill depth (measured with a straightedge and a few spot checks across the room) rather than a fixed number, then scales the manufacturer's base coverage rate accordingly. It converts your area and depth into an equivalent volume, compares that to the bag's rated coverage volume, and rounds up to a whole bag count with a waste allowance for mixing losses and the unpourable compound left in the bucket. Self-leveler sets fast, so ordering short mid-pour is a serious problem — this tool is built to keep you comfortably covered rather than exactly on the line.

Why does coverage per bag change with depth?

Coverage is a volume rating expressed as area at a reference depth — pour it twice as thick and you cover half the area with the same bag, since the total cubic volume per bag is fixed regardless of how it's spread.

How do I measure average fill depth on an uneven floor?

Use a laser level or straightedge and a tape measure at several points across the room, note the gap between the low points and your target finished height, and average those readings rather than using just the lowest or highest spot.

Can I pour self-leveler thicker than the bag recommends?

Most products have a max single-pour depth (often 1-2 inches); beyond that you typically need a second lift or a specific 'deep-pour' formulated product to avoid cracking or excessive heat during cure.

How much working time do I have once it's mixed?

Most self-leveling compounds set within 15-30 minutes of mixing, which is why having your full bag count on hand before you start — not partway through — is critical.
