About this calculator
Mead economics are dominated by honey cost more than any other craft beverage input, since honey typically makes up 60-80% of ingredient cost in a traditional mead and even more in a heavily honeyed dessert-style mead. This calculator takes pounds of honey used, honey cost per pound, batch volume, fermentation loss, and packaging cost to compute cost per bottle. Honey cost varies enormously by source, from $2-3/lb for commodity clover honey up to $8-15/lb for varietal or local wildflower honey that many meaderies prefer for flavor complexity, so this tool is built to make that tradeoff visible in dollars per bottle rather than left as a vague 'better honey costs more' intuition.
Worked example
Using the values the calculator loads with:
Inputs
- Pounds of honey used: 15
- Honey cost per lb: 4.5 $
- Batch volume: 5 gal
- Fermentation & racking loss: 10 %
- Fruit, spices, other additive cost: 20 $
- Bottle, cork, label cost per bottle: 1.3 $
- Total labor cost for batch: 60 $
Results
- Cost per 750ml bottle: $7.79
- Bottles produced: 22.7
- Total batch cost: $177.05
- Honey as % of total cost: 38.1%

FAQ
How much honey does a typical batch need?
Traditional (dry to semi-sweet) mead commonly uses 2.5-3.5 lb of honey per gallon of finished mead, while a sweeter dessert mead can use 4-5+ lb per gallon. That range alone creates a wide cost swing before even considering honey source price, so know your target gravity and honey addition rate before costing a recipe.
Why does honey source matter so much for cost?
Bulk commodity honey (often clover or wildflower blends sold by the drum) runs $2-3.50/lb, while single-varietal or local raw honey favored for distinct flavor character can run $6-15/lb. Since honey is 60-80% of ingredient cost, switching honey source is usually the single biggest lever on total batch cost, bigger than any packaging or labor change.
Does mead have different excise tax treatment than wine?
Mead is generally taxed under the same federal wine excise tax schedule based on ABV tier once fermented without added spirits, but rules around carbonation level and ABV thresholds can shift classification (still wine vs sparkling vs hard cider-adjacent rates). Confirm classification with TTB guidance since misclassifying can mean paying the wrong tax tier.
Accuracy and limitations
- Results are estimates before tax, fees, and inflation unless an input explicitly covers them.
- Rates are treated as fixed for the whole period — variable-rate products will drift from this projection.
- This is educational maths, not financial advice. Check anything contractual with the lender or your accountant.
