About this calculator

Fertilizer application is calculated around delivering a target amount of actual nitrogen per 1,000 square feet, typically 0.5 to 1 lb of nitrogen per 1,000 sq ft per application for a standard lawn feeding, rather than simply spreading a flat weight of product across the yard. The fertilizer bag's N-P-K analysis (like 20-5-10) tells you what percentage of the bag's total weight is actual nitrogen, so a 20% nitrogen product requires five times its nitrogen target's weight in product to deliver the same amount of actual nitrogen as, say, a 10% product. This calculator takes your lawn area, your target nitrogen rate, and your specific fertilizer's nitrogen percentage, and computes exactly how many pounds of that product to spread to hit your target rate without over- or under-applying. Over-fertilizing wastes money, can burn the lawn, and contributes to nutrient runoff into local waterways, while under-fertilizing simply produces a weaker, less green lawn than the product is capable of, so getting the math right from the bag's actual analysis rather than guessing at a bag weight is the difference between good and bad lawn care.

What does the N-P-K number on a fertilizer bag mean?

N-P-K stands for nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium percentages by weight — a 20-5-10 bag is 20% nitrogen, 5% phosphorus, and 10% potassium, with the rest being filler and other nutrients, and nitrogen is what this calculator solves for.

How much nitrogen should I apply per feeding?

A standard lawn feeding targets 0.5-1 lb of actual nitrogen per 1,000 sq ft, with most lawns needing 2-4 feedings per growing season for a total annual nitrogen budget of roughly 2-4 lbs per 1,000 sq ft.
