About this calculator

Joint compound (drywall mud) quantity scales with how much drywall you're hanging and how many coats of tape and mud your finish level requires — a basic Level 4 finish for painted walls typically uses about one gallon of premixed compound per 100-125 square feet of drywall across all three standard coats (tape coat, fill coat, finish coat), while a smooth Level 5 finish used before glossy paint or bold lighting needs a skim coat over the entire surface and uses meaningfully more. This calculator takes your total drywall square footage, converts it using a coverage rate you can adjust for finish level, and returns the number of standard 4.5-gallon buckets (the common size sold at most home centers) to buy, rounded up since compound doesn't store indefinitely once opened and buying short means a mid-project supply run with mismatched batch consistency. It also reports total gallons for anyone buying in smaller 1-gallon tubs for a patch job rather than a full room. Compound shrinks slightly as it dries, so budgeting a bit extra beyond the theoretical minimum on any Level 4 or 5 job is standard practice among drywall finishers.

How much joint compound do I need per sheet of drywall?

As a rough rule, one 4.5-gallon bucket of premixed compound covers about 400-500 square feet across a standard three-coat (tape, fill, finish) Level 4 job, or roughly 12-16 sheets of drywall.

What's the difference between Level 4 and Level 5 finish?

Level 4 is the standard finish for most painted walls with flat or eggshell paint; Level 5 adds a thin skim coat over the entire surface to eliminate any texture variation, needed for glossy paint, dramatic raking light, or very smooth designer finishes.

Should I buy premixed or powder joint compound?
