About this calculator
Grout coverage depends on tile size, joint width, and joint depth — larger tiles with narrower grout lines need far less grout per square foot than small mosaic tiles with wide joints, since grout only fills the gaps between tiles rather than the tile surface itself. This calculator uses the standard grout coverage formula, which combines tile length, tile width, joint width, and joint depth (typically the tile's thickness) into a pounds-per-square-foot figure, then multiplies by your total tile area to get total pounds needed. It's built around the same math tile and grout manufacturers use on their own coverage charts, so it works as a sanity check against a specific product's published coverage rate too. Sanded grout is used for joints 1/8 inch and wider, while unsanded grout is reserved for narrow joints under 1/8 inch, and this distinction matters more for application technique than raw coverage math, though joint width itself is still the biggest driver of total grout weight needed.

FAQ
Why does tile size affect grout amount so much?
Larger tiles have proportionally less grout-joint edge relative to their surface area than small tiles, so a floor of 12x12 tiles needs far less grout than the same square footage in 2x2 mosaic tiles.
Sanded or unsanded grout — which do I need?
Use sanded grout for joints 1/8 inch and wider since the sand prevents shrinking and cracking in larger gaps, and unsanded grout for narrower joints where sand would scratch softer or polished tile surfaces.
How much extra grout should I buy beyond the calculated amount?
