About this calculator
Luxury vinyl plank (LVP) flooring is sold by the box with a fixed square footage of coverage printed on the label, and because planks are installed in a running pattern along the room's length, waste from end cuts and staggered joints adds up faster than many first-time installers expect. This calculator divides your room's total square footage by the coverage per box, applies a waste factor (7-10% for a simple rectangular room, 15%+ for rooms with lots of closets, jogs, or diagonal-laid planks), and rounds up to a full box since LVP can't be purchased by the partial box. It's worth ordering slightly more than the strict minimum since dye lots and pattern batches can vary between production runs, making an exact color match difficult if you run short mid-install and need to reorder, and because keeping a spare box on hand simplifies future repairs if a plank gets damaged.

How much waste factor should I use for vinyl plank?
