About this calculator
Breastfeeding isn't free — pump, bottles, storage bags, extra calories, and lactation consultant visits all cost money, they're just spread differently than a formula bill. This calculator compares formula cost (based on daily ounces and price per ounce) against the equipment and consumable costs of exclusive pumping over the first year, so you can see the real dollar gap rather than assuming breastfeeding costs zero. It intentionally excludes the value of parental time, which is real but highly variable by household.

FAQ
Is formula really this expensive?
Standard powdered formula runs about $0.15-0.25 per ounce mixed; specialty formulas (hypoallergenic, sensitive, organic) can run $0.35-0.60+ per ounce, which more than doubles the annual cost. A baby drinking 28-32 oz/day on standard formula typically costs $1,500-2,200 in the first year.
Does insurance cover a breast pump?
Under the ACA, most insurance plans must cover a breast pump at no cost, either a manual or standard electric pump, though upgraded 'hospital-grade' or wearable pumps may require an out-of-pocket difference. Check your plan's DME (durable medical equipment) benefit and order through an approved supplier before or right after birth.
What about combo feeding?
Run this calculator twice at partial percentages — for example, half the daily ounces from formula and half from pumping — and add the two partial results together. Most families end up doing some mix, and the cost comparison scales roughly linearly with the split.
