About this calculator

Newborns go through 10-12 diapers a day, dropping to 6-8 by toddlerhood, and per-diaper cost rises with size even as usage frequency drops, so a flat 'diapers cost X per month' number misses how spending shifts over the diapering years. This calculator breaks the diapering period into three stages — newborn, infant, and toddler — each with its own daily count and per-diaper cost, then adds wipes, to produce a realistic total cost through an expected potty-training age.

FormulaStage cost = daily diapers × cost per diaper × days in stage; total = sum of stage costs + wipes cost over the full period.

FAQ

Do cloth diapers actually save money?

Yes, usually — a cloth diaper stash costs $300-600 upfront and can be reused for a second child, versus $800-1,000+/year in disposables. The catch is the added cost of extra laundry (water, detergent, dryer energy), which trims but doesn't erase the savings, typically netting $500-1,500 in savings over the diapering years for one child.

Why do diapers get more expensive per unit as the child grows?

Larger sizes use more material and brands price per diaper higher even though you buy fewer per box, because you need fewer changes per day. In practice, per-diaper cost rising and daily usage falling mostly offset each other, so monthly spend stays fairly flat across stages rather than dropping sharply.

How much do diaper subscriptions/coupons actually save?

Amazon Subscribe & Save, store loyalty programs, and manufacturer coupons commonly knock 10-20% off retail price. Buying in bulk during sales cycles (especially size-up transitions when retailers clear old sizes) can push savings toward 25-30% versus paying full price at a drugstore.

Accuracy and limitations

  • Results are estimates before tax, fees, and inflation unless an input explicitly covers them.
  • Rates are treated as fixed for the whole period — variable-rate products will drift from this projection.
  • This is educational maths, not financial advice. Check anything contractual with the lender or your accountant.
