About this calculator
Certified translations for legal, immigration, and academic purposes are typically priced per word ($0.10-$0.35 depending on language pair and rarity) or as a flat per-page/per-document rate for standard civil documents like birth certificates, marriage certificates, and diplomas ($20-$60 per document is common for standard forms since the content is templated). Rush turnaround (24-48 hours instead of the standard 3-5 business days) commonly adds a 25-50% surcharge, and notarization of the translator's certification statement adds $10-$20 more if the receiving agency requires it. Rare language pairs (like Icelandic or certain African or indigenous languages) cost meaningfully more due to translator scarcity. This calculator estimates cost either by word count for lengthy documents (contracts, transcripts, legal filings) or by a flat per-document rate for standard civil records, and adds rush and notarization surcharges.

FAQ
Does USCIS require a specific type of certified translation?
USCIS requires a certification from the translator stating they're competent to translate and that the translation is accurate and complete, but doesn't require the translator to be professionally licensed or the certification to be notarized. Some other agencies, courts, or foreign governments do require notarization, so check the receiving agency's specific requirement before paying extra for it unnecessarily.
Why do standard documents have flat rates instead of per-word pricing?
Birth certificates, marriage certificates, and diplomas follow predictable templates that translation agencies have translated hundreds of times, so they price them as a fixed product rather than billing for the relatively small number of unique words involved.
Can I translate my own documents?
No — nearly every receiving agency, including USCIS, prohibits the document's subject or a close relative from serving as the certified translator, since it creates an obvious conflict of interest regarding accuracy. You need an independent, competent translator regardless of your own language fluency.
Why do rare languages cost more?
Fewer qualified translators exist for less commonly requested language pairs, so agencies charge more to source someone with the right expertise and often need more lead time, which compounds with rush surcharges if you're also on a tight deadline.
Accuracy and limitations
- Results are estimates before tax, fees, and inflation unless an input explicitly covers them.
- Rates are treated as fixed for the whole period — variable-rate products will drift from this projection.
- This is educational maths, not financial advice. Check anything contractual with the lender or your accountant.
