About this calculator
Curriculum decisions get compared on sticker price alone far too often, when the real comparison should be total cost per student per year once licensing, consumable materials, and staff training are all counted. This calculator takes an annual curriculum license or purchase cost, consumable material cost per student, one-time teacher training cost amortized over its useful life, and enrolled students to compute a fully-loaded cost per student per year, and separately per month to compare against tuition allocation. It also shows total program cost so you can weigh it against a competing curriculum with a different cost structure — one with a low license fee but expensive yearly consumables can end up costier than a pricier license with cheap reusable materials once you run the real numbers across your actual enrollment size.
Worked example
Using the values the calculator loads with:
Inputs
- Annual curriculum license / purchase: 4500 $
- Consumable materials per student / year: 65 $
- One-time staff training cost: 6000 $
- Curriculum useful life: 5 years
- Students using this curriculum: 120
Results
- Cost per student / year: $112.50
- Cost per student / month: $9.38
- Total annual curriculum cost: $13,500
- Amortized training cost / year: $1,200

FAQ
What's a reasonable useful life to assume for a curriculum?
Most published early-childhood and K-12 curricula are refreshed or replaced every 5-7 years, though some digital or subscription-based programs are effectively annual since the license itself covers ongoing content updates. If your license already includes yearly updates, set useful life to 1 and skip separate training amortization for update-only years.
Should I amortize training cost at all if teachers turn over?
Yes, but be realistic about the useful life given turnover. If your average teacher tenure is 3 years, amortizing training over 5 years understates real cost, since you'll need to retrain replacement staff sooner. Consider running the calculation with useful life set closer to your average tenure for a more honest number.
How do I compare two curricula fairly with this tool?
Run each curriculum through the calculator with its own license fee, consumable cost, and training requirement, using the same enrolled student count for both. Compare the final cost-per-student number, not the sticker license price, since that's the number that actually reflects what each option costs your program per child per year.
Does this include the classroom labor cost of implementing the curriculum?
No — it isolates the direct materials, licensing, and training cost. Some curricula require significantly more prep time than others (heavy printable-material programs vs. scripted digital lessons), which is a real cost but should be evaluated separately as a teacher-hours factor rather than folded into this dollar figure.
Accuracy and limitations
- Results are estimates before tax, fees, and inflation unless an input explicitly covers them.
- Rates are treated as fixed for the whole period — variable-rate products will drift from this projection.
- This is educational maths, not financial advice. Check anything contractual with the lender or your accountant.
