About this calculator

Most home service bids get built backward from a competitor's number instead of forward from real cost. This calculator starts with your loaded crew cost per hour, adds drive time and materials, then grosses the whole thing up to hit a target margin so the quote actually protects your profit instead of just covering payroll.

FAQ

Why include drive time in the price?

Unpaid drive time is the single biggest silent margin killer in route-based services. If a crew spends 45 minutes driving to a job and you don't price for it, that time comes straight out of profit. Even at 15 minutes each way across dozens of jobs a week, it adds up to a full lost workday of paid labor per crew per month.

What margin should home service jobs target?

Most profitable operators target 40-55% gross margin on labor-heavy jobs like cleaning or junk removal, and 30-40% on equipment- or material-heavy jobs like pressure washing. Anything below 30% leaves no room to absorb no-shows, callbacks, or slow-growth months.

Does loaded rate include payroll taxes?

Yes, it should. Loaded rate means base wage plus payroll taxes (roughly 7.65% FICA plus state unemployment), workers' comp, and any benefits — typically 25-40% above the wage you write on the paycheck. Use the crew loaded labor cost calculator in this same set to build that number precisely.
