About this calculator
Car air conditioning repair has one cheap outcome and several expensive ones, and the refrigerant your car uses moves every number. Vehicles built roughly from 2015 onward use R-1234yf, which costs several times more per pound than the older R-134a, so even a simple evacuate-and-recharge can double. Beyond that the fix depends on where the leak is: an O-ring or a condenser is straightforward, a compressor means flushing the system and replacing the drier, and an evaporator core buried in the dash can be a fifteen-hour dash-out job that costs more than the car is worth on an older vehicle. This calculator prices the diagnosis, the repair path, the refrigerant by type and charge weight, and the labor at your state's rate. Worked assumption for the defaults: a condenser replacement, 2.5 lb of R-1234yf, 3 book hours at the $105 US-average rate, 7.25% tax — about $1,140.

FAQ
Why is R-1234yf so expensive?
It is a lower-global-warming refrigerant that is harder to produce and, for years, was patent-restricted. Prices have eased but remain several times R-134a, and the two are not interchangeable — the fittings and the oil differ.
Are the DIY recharge cans worth it?
Only as a short-term patch on an R-134a system with a slow leak, and they risk overcharging, which damages the compressor. If the system is empty there is a leak; adding refrigerant without finding it vents it straight back out.
Why does an evaporator cost so much when the part is cheap?
Because it lives inside the dash. Most of the bill is the ten to fifteen hours of removing the dashboard, steering column and HVAC case, then reassembling everything without rattles.
Where do the state labor rates come from?
They are independent-shop door rates by state band — what a non-dealer shop charges per book hour before parts. Rates cluster tightly by market cost of living, which is why the tool groups states rather than pretending each one has a single number. If you already have a quote, back out the shop's own rate and use that.
Accuracy and limitations
