About this calculator

Commercial auto is priced per vehicle, and the four inputs that move it most are vehicle weight class, radius of operation, the driving records of the people behind the wheel, and the combined single limit your contracts require. A local service van on a 50-mile radius with clean drivers is a fraction of the cost of a straight truck running 400-mile lanes, and one driver with a major violation can add more to the bill than a whole extra vehicle. This calculator prices a mixed fleet, applies hired-and-non-owned coverage for employees using their own cars on company business, adds the physical damage portion based on vehicle values and deductible, and reports both total annual premium and cost per vehicle per month so it can be built into job pricing. Real quotes depend heavily on loss history, garaging location, cargo carried, and whether a client contract demands a $1M or $2M limit with additional-insured status — that contractual requirement is usually what determines the limit you actually buy.

FormulaPer Vehicle = Base × Class Factor × Radius Factor × Limit Factor × Driver Factor + Physical Damage. Total = Σ Vehicles + Hired & Non-Owned.

FAQ

Can I insure work vehicles on a personal policy?

Usually not. Personal auto policies exclude regular business use beyond commuting, and a denied claim on a work vehicle is exactly the scenario that closes small businesses. Vehicles titled to the business need a commercial policy.

What is hired and non-owned auto coverage?

It covers liability when employees drive rented vehicles or their own cars for company errands. It is inexpensive and closes a gap most small businesses do not realise they have.

Why does radius matter so much?

Longer radius means more highway miles, higher speeds, more severe losses, and often interstate filing requirements. Rating plans treat it as one of the strongest severity predictors.

Do DOT-regulated trucks price the same way?

No. Motor carriers with federal authority face minimum financial responsibility limits, filings, and cargo coverage that sit outside this estimate. Treat heavy-class output here as a floor.

Accuracy and limitations

  • Results are estimates before tax, fees, and inflation unless an input explicitly covers them.
  • Rates are treated as fixed for the whole period — variable-rate products will drift from this projection.
  • This is educational maths, not financial advice. Check anything contractual with the lender or your accountant.
