About this calculator
Small business liability premiums are rated primarily on revenue, payroll, industry risk class, and the limits you buy. A consultant working from a laptop and a roofing contractor with a four-person crew can both be quoted general liability, but the roofer pays several times more per dollar of revenue because the loss experience of the class is worse. This estimator applies typical relativities to produce an annual range for general liability, adds professional liability (errors and omissions) where the work involves advice or deliverables, adds a business owner's policy bundle discount where property coverage is included, and shows the cost per $1,000 of revenue so you can build it into pricing. Real quotes vary widely by carrier appetite, claim history, subcontractor use, and whether clients demand additional-insured endorsements or higher limits in their contracts — those contract requirements are usually the reason a business needs more coverage than it would otherwise buy.

FAQ
Is general liability the same as professional liability?
No. General liability covers bodily injury and property damage to third parties; professional liability covers financial harm from your advice, errors, or missed deliverables. Service businesses usually need both, and client contracts frequently require both.
What is a BOP?
A business owner's policy bundles general liability with commercial property at a discount, which is why adding property value above reduces the effective rate here. Eligibility depends on size and class.
Do I need workers' compensation too?
Almost certainly if you have employees — it is mandatory in nearly every state and is priced separately from liability, based on payroll and class code. It is not included in this estimate.
Why do quotes vary so much?
Carrier appetite for your class, prior claims, subcontractor use, contract requirements such as waivers of subrogation, and state loss trends. Treat this as a budgeting range and gather three real quotes.
Accuracy and limitations
- Results are estimates before tax, fees, and inflation unless an input explicitly covers them.
- Rates are treated as fixed for the whole period — variable-rate products will drift from this projection.
- This is educational maths, not financial advice. Check anything contractual with the lender or your accountant.
