About this calculator

Hot mix asphalt is priced and delivered by the ton, and estimating tonnage accurately matters both for driveway paving quotes and for double-checking a contractor's material order against your project's actual footprint. This calculator takes your driveway or path area and compacted thickness, commonly 2 inches for a residential driveway surface course or 3-4 inches total across binder and surface courses for heavier use, then converts to cubic feet and applies asphalt's standard density of approximately 145 lbs per cubic foot (roughly 2 tons per cubic yard) to compute total tonnage. A waste factor is included to cover truck-to-driveway transfer losses, minor spillage during raking and compaction, and the reality that asphalt trucks deliver in load increments that rarely divide evenly into a small residential job's exact tonnage. This tool is most useful for spot-checking a paving quote or estimating a patch/overlay job, since full new driveway construction usually also needs a separate gravel base layer calculated on top of the asphalt surface course itself.
