About this calculator
A well-structured partnership can cut per-hour ownership cost by more than half compared to sole ownership, but only if the cost split matches how the airplane is actually used. This calculator splits fixed costs (hangar, insurance, loan, annual) evenly across partners since those exist regardless of who flies more, then allocates variable costs (fuel, maintenance reserve) by each partner's actual hours, producing a fair total and per-hour cost for each partner rather than a flat equal split that penalizes low-hour partners.

FAQ
Is an even fixed-cost split always fair?
It's fair when partners have roughly similar usage and similar say in scheduling priority. If one partner flies far more than others, some partnerships weight part of the fixed cost by hours too, or require the high-usage partner to buy a larger ownership share up front, so a pure even split isn't universal — read your partnership agreement's cost formula carefully.
What costs go in the fixed pool versus variable pool?
Fixed: hangar or tie-down rent, insurance premium, loan payment, annual inspection base cost, state registration. Variable: fuel, oil, and reserve funds for engine overhaul and routine maintenance that scale with hours flown. Some partnerships also fund a shared reserve account per hour flown to prevent a scramble when a big bill (like an engine overhaul) comes due.
How many partners is optimal?
Three to four is the most common sweet spot — enough to meaningfully cut fixed cost per partner without creating scheduling conflicts that limit each partner to too few available days. Beyond five or six partners, scheduling friction and disagreements over maintenance decisions tend to outweigh the additional cost savings.
What happens to the ongoing cost split if a partner leaves?
Most partnership agreements require the buyout of an exiting partner's equity share at appraised value, and the remaining partners then either absorb the higher per-person fixed share or recruit a replacement partner. Building an exit clause into the agreement before it's needed avoids disputes later.
