The 8.75% reality
OR's brackets compress brutally — a $60K earner is already in the 8.75% marginal bracket. Combined with federal 22%, the marginal rate on a typical Portland professional's raise exceeds 35% before FICA.
Portland's stacked local taxes
Portland-area high earners pay Metro Supportive Housing (1% over $125K) and Multnomah County Preschool for All (1.5% over $125K, 3% over $250K). Top combined marginal in Portland approaches 13.9% — above California's 13.3% for some incomes.
No sales tax offset
OR's 0% sales tax saves a household spending $40K/yr on goods roughly $2,000–$3,600 vs. neighboring WA or CA — meaningful, but it doesn't close the income-tax gap for earners over ~$80K.

Why is Oregon's income tax so high?
OR funds government almost entirely through income tax (no sales tax). The 8.75% bracket starts at $10,750 single, so most workers pay near-top marginal rates.
Does Portland have extra income taxes?
Yes — Metro 1% and Multnomah County 1.5–3% on income over $125K (single), on top of the state's 9.9%.
Does OR tax Social Security?
No. Oregon fully exempts Social Security, though other retirement income is generally taxed.
Living in the five boroughs changes the answer — the NYC paycheck calculator adds the city resident tax on top of state withholding.
