Blood Pressure Category Calculator

Classify a blood pressure reading into the ACC/AHA categories, with pulse pressure and mean arterial pressure calculated alongside.

Short answer

Blood Pressure Category Calculator

97Mean arterial pressure

Mean arterial pressure of 97 mmHg is the average driving pressure for organ perfusion; below 65 mmHg is generally considered inadequate. Pulse pressure above 60 mmHg suggests arterial stiffening, which becomes common after 60. Classification requires the average of two or more readings on two or more occasions, taken seated after five minutes of rest.

How it's calculated: 128/82 mmHg — Stage 1 hypertension. Pulse pressure 46 mmHg. Adjust the inputs below to recalculate for your own numbers.

Formula used

MAP and ACC/AHA categories

The 2017 ACC/AHA guideline lowered the hypertension threshold to 130/80. Mean arterial pressure weights diastolic more heavily because the heart spends about two thirds of each cycle in diastole.

MAP = diastolic + (systolic − diastolic) ÷ 3 · Pulse pressure = systolic − diastolic

Measure it properly or the number is noise

Cuff size, arm position, talking, a full bladder, and caffeine within 30 minutes can each shift a reading by 5–15 mmHg. Home readings taken correctly are more predictive of outcomes than a single clinic measurement.

  • Sit with back supported, feet flat, arm at heart level, for five minutes first.
  • Take two readings a minute apart, morning and evening, for seven days.
  • White-coat hypertension affects up to 20% of people diagnosed in clinic.

FAQ

What is a normal blood pressure?

Under 120 systolic and under 80 diastolic per the ACC/AHA guideline. 120–129 over under 80 is classified as elevated.

What is mean arterial pressure used for?

MAP estimates average perfusion pressure to organs and is used in critical care, where a MAP of at least 65 mmHg is a common target.

Is one high reading hypertension?

No. Diagnosis requires elevated averages across at least two separate occasions, ideally supported by home or ambulatory monitoring.
