Expanded YPP vs full YPP

YouTube introduced expanded YPP in 2023 to let smaller creators access fan-funding tools earlier. Expanded YPP (500 subs + 3K hours or 3M Shorts) unlocks Channel Memberships, Super Chat, Super Thanks, and Shopping. Ad revenue still requires full YPP (1K subs + 4K hours or 10M Shorts in 90 days).

  • Expanded YPP is opt-in — apply even if you don't see the email.
  • Ad-share creators must hit full YPP thresholds.
  • Three valid public uploads in the last 90 days is a hidden gotcha.

The Shorts path is faster — but capped

10M Shorts views in 90 days sounds huge, but viral channels hit it in a month. The trap: Shorts RPM is $0.03–$0.20 per 1K views, so creators who qualify via Shorts often earn less than long-form channels qualifying via watch hours. Use Shorts to qualify, then transition to long-form for income.

What disqualifies you

Reused content (compilations, slideshows over still images), AI-generated low-effort videos, Community Guidelines strikes, and copyright issues will all block YPP approval. Channels under 18 (or without a guardian) can't apply.

Rex's Notes

YouTube Partner Program eligibility has multiple thresholds, partial tier-ups, and a frequently-misunderstood watch-hours-vs-Shorts-views path. This calculator tracks your progress against each threshold (1k subs, 4k watch hours, 10M Shorts views, monetization tiers) and forecasts your time-to-eligibility based on current growth velocity.

What each input means

Get these inputs right and the output is reliable. Get them wrong and the calculator just multiplies bad assumptions.

Current subscribers

Total subscriber count.

Typical range: Path 1 minimum: 1,000 subs. Path 2 minimum: 500 subs.

12-month watch hours

Long-form public watch hours, rolling 12 months.

Typical range: 4,000 hours for full YPP; 3,000 for early access tier.

90-day Shorts views

Public Shorts views, rolling 90 days.

Typical range: 10M for full YPP; 3M for early access tier.

Recent monthly velocity

Average subs gained, watch hours, Shorts views per month over last 90 days.

Typical range: Calculate from YouTube Studio analytics.

Worked examples

Real scenarios with the math walked through line by line.

Example

Long-form-focused channel near full YPP

Scenario: Currently 800 subs, 2,800 watch hours/12mo. Gaining 90 subs/mo + 350 watch hrs/mo.

Math: Subs gap = 200, ~2.2 months. Watch hour gap = 1,200, ~3.4 months. Full eligibility in ~3.5 months.

Outcome: Watch hours is the binding constraint. Push longer videos (8–15 min) to accelerate.

Example

Shorts-heavy channel on the alternate path

Scenario: 1,200 subs, 4M Shorts views/90 days. Gaining 1.5M Shorts views/month.

Math: Shorts views gap = 6M, ~4 months at current pace. Subs threshold cleared.

Outcome: On Shorts path. To accelerate: post 1+ short per day; consistency drives algorithm boosts more than view count.

Common mistakes

Where this calculation usually goes wrong in the real world.

  • Counting unlisted/private videos. Only public videos qualify.
  • Including pre-2022 watch hours from removed videos. They're stripped when the video is deleted.
  • Assuming subscribers ≈ eligibility. You need watch hours OR Shorts views in addition.
  • Confusing the 'early access' tier (3k hours OR 3M Shorts) with full YPP (4k OR 10M). Early access gives partial monetization (Memberships, Super Chats) but no ad revenue.
  • Missing the 90-day Shorts window — it's a rolling 90 days, not lifetime.

When to use this calculator

  • Checking progress toward YPP for a new channel.
  • Deciding whether to optimize for long-form or Shorts to hit eligibility fastest.
  • Forecasting time-to-monetization for business planning.
  • Re-checking after a content pivot or temporary slow-down.

Glossary

Term

YPP

YouTube Partner Program — required to earn ad revenue, Memberships, Super Chats, and most other monetization.

Term

Early access tier

Lower eligibility threshold (500 subs + 3k watch hrs OR 3M Shorts views) that unlocks Memberships and Super Chats but not ad revenue.

Term

Watch hours

Total long-form public watch time over rolling 12 months. Shorts views don't count toward watch hours.

More questions answered

Should I focus on watch hours or Shorts views to qualify faster?

Depends on current numbers and content fit. Watch hours come faster for niches with high-retention 8–15 minute content (education, tutorials, vlogs). Shorts views accelerate fast for visual-hook niches (reactions, transformations, comedy). Most channels under 3 months old find Shorts faster to threshold; mature niches typically clear watch hours faster because retention is higher.

Why was I denied after meeting the thresholds?

YPP requires manual review against Community Guidelines + Monetization Policies. Common rejection reasons: (1) reused/repurposed content (clip compilations, AI-generated text-to-speech faceless channels), (2) borderline content (firearms, gambling, adult-adjacent), (3) violating Community Guidelines in the past 6 months. Fix the flagged issues + reapply after 30 days.

Can I monetize while waiting for eligibility?

Yes — affiliate marketing, sponsorships, off-YouTube products (newsletter, course, Discord paid tier), and Twitch/TikTok cross-monetization work without YPP. Most growing channels generate 60–80% of total revenue outside YPP even after they qualify; YPP is helpful but rarely the primary income source under 100k subs.

FAQ

How long does it take to reach 1,000 subscribers?

Median is 6–18 months for consistent uploaders. Niche selection matters more than upload frequency — finance/tech/education hit 1K faster than oversaturated entertainment niches.

What's the difference between expanded YPP and YPP?

Expanded YPP (500 subs + 3K hours OR 3M Shorts views in 90d) unlocks fan-funding tools (memberships, Super Chat, Super Thanks, Shopping) but NOT ad revenue. Full YPP (1K subs + 4K hours OR 10M Shorts in 90d) unlocks ad revenue on top.

Do Shorts views count for the 4,000 watch-hour requirement?

No. Shorts views count only toward the alternative 10M Shorts-views-in-90-days path. Watch hours = long-form (>60s) public watch time.

Can I lose YPP eligibility?

Yes. Channels that drop below thresholds for 6+ months, get 3 Community Guidelines strikes, or have 6+ months of inactivity can be removed from YPP. Eligibility is rolling, not one-time.
