About this calculator
Welded wire mesh (commonly 6x6 W1.4xW1.4, sold in flat sheets or rolls) is a standard light reinforcement for residential slabs and patios, laid across the full slab area before the pour to control surface cracking as the concrete cures and shrinks. This calculator takes your slab area and the coverage size of your mesh sheets, commonly 5x10 feet (50 sq ft) or 4x8 feet (32 sq ft) for flat panels, then divides your total area by the sheet's coverage, rounding up and layering in an overlap allowance since adjacent mesh sheets need to overlap by at least one full grid square (typically 6 inches) where they meet to maintain continuous reinforcement across the slab. Sheets should be positioned roughly at the mid-depth or slightly upper-third of the slab thickness rather than laid on the ground, since wire mesh only resists cracking effectively when it's actually embedded within the pour rather than sitting at the very bottom where the concrete flows over top of it.

How much overlap does wire mesh need between sheets?

Where should wire mesh sit in the slab?
