About this calculator

Vinyl siding is priced in the trade by the 'square,' a roofing-and-siding industry unit equal to 100 square feet of wall coverage, and total installed cost combines the siding panel material rate, a house wrap/moisture barrier layer, trim and J-channel around windows and corners, and installation labor. This calculator converts your home's total wall square footage into squares, applies separate rates for material and labor, and adds a trim allowance based on linear footage of openings. 2026 US national averages run about $3.50-$7.50 per square foot installed for standard 0.040-0.044 gauge vinyl siding, or roughly $350-$750 per square, with premium insulated or thicker-gauge vinyl running $6-$12 per square foot. Removal of old siding, if needed, typically adds $0.50-$1.50 per square foot on top of these installed rates.

FormulaSquares = Wall Sq Ft / 100. Total = Squares × (Material Rate + Labor Rate) × 100 + Trim Allowance + Removal (if applicable).

FAQ

What is a 'square' of siding?

A square is a standardized unit in siding and roofing equal to 100 square feet of wall or roof coverage — contractors and suppliers use it because it makes material ordering and labor pricing easier to standardize across jobs of different sizes.

Is insulated vinyl siding worth the extra cost?

Insulated vinyl siding has a foam backing that adds R-value (typically R-2 to R-5) and helps flatten out wall imperfections for a smoother look, commonly costing 30-60% more than standard vinyl — it's most worth it in colder climates where the added insulation offsets heating costs over time.

Does removing old siding always add cost?

Yes, if there's existing siding to remove — asbestos or wood siding removal can be more involved (and sometimes requires special disposal handling for asbestos) than removing old vinyl, so get a specific quote if your home has anything other than existing vinyl or wood lap siding.

How long does vinyl siding installation typically take?

A standard single-family home (1,500-2,500 sq ft of wall area) typically takes a crew 3-7 days to install, depending on complexity of the home's shape, number of windows/corners needing trim work, and whether old siding needs to be removed first.

Accuracy and limitations

  • Results are estimates before tax, fees, and inflation unless an input explicitly covers them.
  • Rates are treated as fixed for the whole period — variable-rate products will drift from this projection.
  • This is educational maths, not financial advice. Check anything contractual with the lender or your accountant.
