About this calculator
Takt time comes from the German word for the baton a conductor uses to set tempo, and that's exactly its role in production: it sets the rhythm the whole line must hit to meet demand without overproducing. It is not the same as cycle time — cycle time is how long your process actually takes to make one unit, while takt time is how long you're allowed to take based on demand. If your cycle time is faster than takt, you're building inventory you don't need yet; if it's slower, you're going to miss shipments. This calculator divides your available production time (after breaks and planned stops) by the customer demand for that period. Use it when balancing a line, staffing a cell, or deciding whether to add a shift. A common mistake is calculating takt time off total demand for the month divided by calendar days instead of actual working time — always use net available minutes, not gross shift length.

FAQ
What's the difference between takt time and cycle time?
Takt time is demand-driven — it's the pace the customer requires. Cycle time is process-driven — it's how long your equipment or operator actually takes per unit. You compare the two to decide if you need more capacity, fewer people, or a faster process, but they answer different questions.
Should I recalculate takt time often?
Recalculate whenever demand shifts meaningfully — new customer order, seasonal swing, or a changed shift schedule. Many plants revisit it monthly or with each new sales forecast. Running to a stale takt time either starves the customer or builds excess WIP.
Does takt time apply to job shops with mixed products?
Yes, but you calculate a blended takt time using total demand across all part numbers for that resource, or calculate takt per product family if cycle times vary widely. Job shops with highly variable work often use takt time per work order instead of per day.
What if my cycle time is way under takt time?
You have slack — that's an opportunity to cross-train the operator on other tasks, run a second product on the same line, or reduce headcount/shifts rather than let the line overproduce and build inventory that ties up cash.
