About this calculator

FAQ
Why does exchange rate matter so much?
A 10% currency swing against the dollar over a semester directly inflates every local expense — housing, food, transport — since those costs are set in local currency, not dollars, unlike the program fee which is often locked in USD upfront.
What's commonly left off program fee estimates?
Visa application fees, mandatory local health insurance, SIM cards, and weekend travel. Budget an extra $1,500-$3,000 beyond the sticker program fee for these.
Does financial aid transfer to study abroad?
Often yes for exchange programs run through your home institution, but third-party provider programs may not qualify for the same aid package — confirm with your financial aid office before committing.
Is a negative incremental cost possible?
Yes — some study abroad programs in lower cost-of-living countries can come in cheaper than a home semester once you exclude flights, especially at public universities abroad with subsidized tuition partnerships.
