About this calculator

A roofing 'square' equals 100 square feet of roof surface and is the standard unit contractors, shingle manufacturers, and material suppliers use for pricing and ordering — never square feet directly. This calculator takes your roof's footprint area (length times width per roof plane, summed across all planes) and a pitch multiplier to account for the fact that a sloped roof has more actual surface area than its flat footprint suggests; a low-slope roof adds very little extra area, while a steep 12/12 pitch roof can add over 40% more surface area than the same footprint measured flat. It divides the adjusted area by 100 to get raw squares, then rounds up and adds a waste factor for hips, valleys, ridge caps, and standard shingle overlap that isn't accounted for in a pure footprint calculation. Roofing squares directly drive shingle bundle counts, underlayment roll counts, and labor quotes, so getting this number right before calling contractors for bids helps you sanity-check that their material estimates and pricing are in a reasonable range for your actual roof size.

What is a roofing square?

One roofing square equals 100 square feet of actual roof surface — it's the standard unit for pricing shingles, underlayment, and labor, so a 2,000 sq ft roof footprint isn't automatically 20 squares once slope is factored in.
