About this calculator

Buying a riding mower is a large upfront cost plus fuel, maintenance, and storage, while a weekly lawn service has no equipment cost but bills you every cutting season indefinitely. This tool compares the amortized mower cost plus annual upkeep against the seasonal lawn service bill so you can see how many seasons it takes to break even, and the total cost difference over your expected ownership horizon.

FormulaMower Total = Purchase Price + (Annual Fuel + Maintenance) × Years − Resale Value at end. Service Total = Seasonal Rate × Years.

FAQ

Does this include your own time mowing?

No — factor in an hourly value for your time; if you value an afternoon at $40+, a lawn service closes the cost gap significantly even when the mower wins on paper.

What about storage space for a mower?

A riding mower needs a shed or garage bay; if you'd have to build storage just for it, add that cost to the mower side of the comparison.

Do lawn services handle edging and cleanup too?

Most standard service contracts include edging, blowing clippings, and trimming — doing all of that yourself with a mower adds extra tools and time not captured in the mower's fuel/maintenance line.

Accuracy and limitations

  • Results are estimates before tax, fees, and inflation unless an input explicitly covers them.
  • Rates are treated as fixed for the whole period — variable-rate products will drift from this projection.
  • This is educational maths, not financial advice. Check anything contractual with the lender or your accountant.
