About this calculator

New orchard blocks run 3-5 years of pure cash outflow before the first meaningful harvest, and full production often isn't reached until year 6-8 depending on species and rootstock. This calculator lays out upfront establishment cost, annual carrying costs during the non-bearing years, and then models ramping revenue as trees or vines come into production, to find the year cumulative cash flow turns positive. This is the number lenders want before financing a planting, and it's also what tells you whether a high-density, faster-bearing system is worth its higher per-acre establishment cost compared to a traditional lower-density planting that takes longer to pay back but costs less upfront.

FAQ

Why does payback take so long even for fast-bearing crops?

It's not just the wait for first fruit — establishment cost plus every dollar of carrying cost during those non-bearing years has to be paid back before you're even at breakeven, and early bearing years produce only a fraction of full yield, so revenue ramps slowly even after the first harvest.

Does high-density planting really pay back faster?

Often yes, despite higher per-acre establishment cost, because high-density systems reach a meaningful percentage of full yield by year 2-3 versus year 4-5 for traditional spacing, and that earlier revenue frequently outweighs the extra upfront trees and trellising cost.

What's missing from this model?

Land cost or opportunity cost of the acres, financing interest on the establishment loan, and price/yield risk aren't included. For a bank-ready projection, layer in your actual loan terms and a conservative price scenario, not just the expected case.

How sensitive is payback to yield ramp speed?

Very. Shaving one year off the ramp-to-full-production timeline (say from 4 years to 3) typically pulls payback forward by close to a full year, since that's one more year of near-full revenue landing inside the payback window instead of after it.
