About this calculator

Markup and margin are not the same number. A 30% markup on cost is only a 23% gross margin — the gap is where small contractors lose their profit.

How does the job bid, markup & margin calculator work?

Markup and margin are not the same number. A 30% markup on cost is only a 23% gross margin — the gap is where small contractors lose their profit. The underlying maths is: Price = cost ÷ (1 − target margin); markup% = price ÷ cost − 1.
