About this calculator
In-kind gifts of goods, from a truckload of canned food to a donated laptop, must be recorded at fair market value at the time of donation under GAAP (ASC 958), and new FASB standards effective for fiscal years after mid-2021 require disaggregating in-kind gifts by category on the financial statements rather than lumping them into one line. This calculator takes the quantity donated, a fair market unit value (retail price for new goods, thrift/resale value for used goods, or a professional's normal billing rate for donated services that meet recognition criteria), and produces the total value to record, plus flags what percentage of total revenue in-kind gifts represent, since donors and auditors want to know if your organization is unusually reliant on non-cash support.

FAQ
Do I need a receipt or appraisal for large in-kind gifts?
The donor, not your organization, is responsible for substantiating their tax deduction, but IRS rules require the donor to get a qualified appraisal for non-cash gifts over $5,000 in claimed value. Your job is to issue a written acknowledgment describing the item without stating a dollar value.
What changed with the 2020 FASB update (ASU 2020-07)?
Effective for fiscal years beginning after June 15, 2021, nonprofits must present in-kind contributions as a separate line on the statement of activities (not lumped with cash) and disclose, by category, the valuation technique and principal market used for each type of in-kind gift in the footnotes.
Can I recognize the value of donated volunteer time the same way?
No, that's a separate, stricter test under ASC 958-605: volunteer time is only recognized if it creates or enhances a nonfinancial asset, or requires specialized skills the volunteer has and you'd otherwise have to purchase. Most general volunteer hours don't qualify even though donated goods almost always do.
How do I value donated professional services like legal or ad space?
Use the fair value that the market would pay for that specific service, generally the professional's normal billing rate for their time, or the rate a comparable ad buyer would pay for that same media placement. Never use a discounted 'nonprofit rate' if that's not what a market participant would actually pay.
Accuracy and limitations
- Results are estimates before tax, fees, and inflation unless an input explicitly covers them.
- Rates are treated as fixed for the whole period — variable-rate products will drift from this projection.
- This is educational maths, not financial advice. Check anything contractual with the lender or your accountant.
