About this calculator
A Health Savings Account is the only account that skips tax on the way in, skips tax on growth, and skips tax on the way out for qualified medical expenses. This calculator compares investing HSA contributions and letting them ride for decades against putting the same dollars into a taxable account, so you can see the dollar value of the triple exclusion rather than just hearing it's 'the best account.' It models your current contribution, expected annual growth, years until you'd tap the funds, and your marginal tax rate plus long-term capital gains rate for the taxable comparison. The gap comes from three separate breaks stacking: the upfront deduction (or payroll pretax treatment), tax-free compounding with no annual drag from dividends or capital gains distributions, and a fully tax-free withdrawal when the money is used for medical costs, including reimbursing yourself years later for receipts you saved.

FAQ
Do I have to spend HSA money on medical bills right away?
No. There's no use-it-or-lose-it rule and no deadline to reimburse yourself. You can pay medical bills out of pocket now, save the receipts, invest the HSA balance for decades, and reimburse yourself later tax-free whenever you want — even in retirement. That's what makes long-term investing inside an HSA so powerful.
What happens if I withdraw for non-medical expenses?
Before 65, it's taxed as ordinary income plus a 20% penalty, similar to an early 401(k) withdrawal but worse. After 65, non-medical withdrawals are taxed as ordinary income with no penalty, functioning like a traditional IRA. That's a solid fallback, not a reason to treat it as a spending account.
Should I invest my HSA or keep it in cash for near-term bills?
If you can afford to pay current medical costs from cash flow or savings, invest the HSA and let compounding work. Keep a cash cushion inside the HSA (often $1,000–$2,000) only if you genuinely expect near-term claims you can't cover elsewhere.
Is the HSA contribution limit the same as an FSA?
No. For 2024 the HSA limit is $4,150 individual / $8,300 family, plus a $1,000 catch-up at 55+. FSAs top out lower and carry use-it-or-lose-it rules. HSAs also require an HSA-eligible high-deductible health plan.
Accuracy and limitations
- Results are estimates before tax, fees, and inflation unless an input explicitly covers them.
- Rates are treated as fixed for the whole period — variable-rate products will drift from this projection.
- This is educational maths, not financial advice. Check anything contractual with the lender or your accountant.
