How much flooring do I need?
For a 180 sq ft room with a 10% waste allowance, you need 198 sq ft of flooring, which is 9 boxes at 24 sq ft per box.
Why is a 10% waste allowance standard?
Straight cuts along walls, closets, and doorways typically waste 5-10% of material; diagonal installs or rooms with lots of angles and cutouts should use 15% or higher.
Should I buy all boxes from the same dye lot?
Yes — flooring color and pattern can vary slightly between manufacturing lots, so buying all boxes from the same lot number avoids visible mismatches, especially important for hardwood and laminate.
What if I have multiple rooms?
Calculate each room's area separately (including its own waste allowance for cuts) and sum the totals before rounding up to full boxes, since box counts don't split evenly across rooms.
